ETHA Policy Priorities: Strengthening Care Across Europe

ETHA is committed to advancing policy priorities that strengthen care for patients with bleeding and clotting disorders across Europe.

Our focus areas include:

  • Advancing antithrombotic stewardship to improve the safe and effective use of therapies across health systems

  • Increasing awareness and education around women’s health, particularly bleeding and clotting conditions across the lifespan

  • Improving access to health data for researchers and clinicians to support innovation, evidence generation and better patient outcomes

  • Promoting equitable access to diagnosis, treatment and specialized care across Member States

  • Engaging EU institutions and national policymakers to ensure thrombosis and haemostasis are recognized within broader public health and patient safety agenda

Antithrombotic Stewardship in Europe

A Core Priority for ETHA

Antithrombotic therapy is a cornerstone of care for millions of patients across Europe, yet significant variation persists in how these therapies are prescribed, monitored and managed across Member States. Despite strong clinical guidelines, gaps in implementation continue to impact patient safety, care coordination and outcomes. ETHA is committed to advancing antithrombotic stewardship as a practical, evidence-based approach to improve the quality and consistency of care across Europe.

Antithrombotic stewardship brings together multidisciplinary expertise to support optimal treatment decisions, reduce medication-related risks and ensure alignment with clinical guidance. As outlined in ETHA’s position paper, strengthening stewardship frameworks across Europe represents a key opportunity to reduce unwarranted variation, improve patient outcomes and support more efficient use of health system resources.

Our Focus

ETHA is working to elevate antithrombotic stewardship within EU health and policy discussions through:

  • Promoting recognition of stewardship as a patient safety and quality of care priority

  • Supporting alignment of approaches across Member States

  • Advancing data transparency and shared learning across Europe

  • Engaging policymakers, clinicians and health systems to drive implementation

Current Activities
To support this work, ETHA is:

  • Conducting a survey across member countries to map current stewardship practices and identify gaps

  • Developing a follow-up policy paper with actionable recommendations for EU and national stakeholders

  • Engaging with EU institutions and partners to position antithrombotic stewardship within broader public health and patient safety frameworks
